How to ask customers for Google reviews: scripts, timing and a 5x lift playbook
7 min read · Updated 2026-06-28
Ask within 24 hours of a positive moment, by SMS or email, with a direct short link to your Google review page. Personalize the ask, never offer an incentive and never gate the ask behind a star filter. Expect a 15 to 30% conversion rate when timing and channel are right.
Most businesses bury this. They have hundreds of happy customers and 12 reviews. The gap is not customer love, it is the ask. Done right, a simple review request lifts your monthly review count by 3 to 5x in under 60 days.
The 3 rules Google enforces
- No incentives. You cannot offer a discount, voucher or freebie for a review. Google removes reviews tied to incentives and can suspend profiles.
- No review gating. You cannot ask happy customers privately first and only send unhappy ones to a feedback form. Send every customer the same link.
- No bulk solicitation off platform. Asking is fine. Buying reviews, swapping reviews with other businesses or running review parties is not.
Timing beats wording
The single biggest lever is when you ask. Send the request within 24 hours of the positive moment: meal finished, treatment complete, job signed off. Wait a week and your conversion drops by more than half.
Channel by channel templates
SMS (highest conversion)
Hi [first name], thanks for choosing [business] today. If you had a good experience would you mind leaving a quick Google review? It really helps a small team like ours. [short link]
Email follow up
Subject: Quick favour [first name]? Body: Thanks again for visiting [business] yesterday. If you have 30 seconds, a short Google review would mean a lot to the team. Here is the direct link: [short link]
In person, at the counter
Card or receipt with a QR code that links straight to your review page. Verbal: "If you enjoyed today, a Google review is the best thing you can do for us." Short, no pressure.
Build the right short link
Use Google's place ID review URL, not your profile URL. From Google Business Profile, copy your Place ID and build: https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=YOUR_PLACE_ID. This opens the review form directly. Wrap it in a short link for SMS.
How many to send
If you serve 200 customers a month and send to all of them, expect 30 to 60 new reviews a month. Most businesses need 40 reviews to start appearing in the local 3 pack for non branded searches, so a single quarter of consistent asking changes your local SEO permanently.
Automate the ask, automate the reply
Two sides of the same loop. Send the ask automatically when an invoice is marked paid or an appointment is closed. Reply automatically when the review lands. AutoReplyPilot handles the reply side in your brand voice so the moment the new review hits, the on brand response is ready for approval.
