How to remove a fake Google review: the 2026 step by step process
7 min read · Updated 2026-06-28
Flag the review from your Google Business Profile, then submit a removal request via the Business Profile Help support form. Cite the specific policy violated (fake engagement, off topic, conflict of interest, spam) and attach evidence. Reply to the review calmly while you wait. Removal takes 3 to 14 days on average.
Fake reviews are infuriating and feel personal. The good news is Google removes a lot more of them than owners assume, as long as you flag the right policy violation and include evidence.
Step 1: Identify the policy violation
Google only removes reviews that break a specific policy. The most common grounds:
- Fake engagement (review from someone who was never a customer).
- Conflict of interest (posted by a competitor, ex employee or someone with a grudge).
- Off topic (rant about politics, religion or something unrelated).
- Spam or duplicate (same content posted multiple times).
- Restricted content (profanity, hate speech, harassment, sexually explicit).
- Impersonation (pretending to be someone they are not).
Step 2: Flag the review in Google Business Profile
- Open Google Business Profile and find the review.
- Click the three dot menu next to it and choose Report review.
- Select the policy that fits best.
- Submit and note the date.
Step 3: Escalate via the support form
Flagging alone often goes nowhere. Escalate the same day via the Business Profile Help support contact form. Pick Manage customer reviews, then Remove reviews, and walk through to live chat or email. Reference the review, the policy violated and your evidence.
Step 4: Evidence that actually works
- No record in your booking, POS or CRM system on the dates implied.
- Reviewer's profile shows a pattern of 1 star reviews to competitors in your area.
- Reviewer is a known ex employee, supplier dispute or named competitor.
- Identical text appears on competitor profiles (copy paste attack).
Step 5: Reply calmly while you wait
Removal can take days or weeks. In the meantime your reply is what future customers see. Stay neutral and factual.
"Worst place in town, total scam."
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We are unable to match this review to a visit in our records. We take every concern seriously and would be happy to look into a specific experience if more detail is shared.
What does not work
- Replying angrily or accusing the reviewer of being a competitor. Both look worse than the review.
- Spamming the report button from multiple accounts. Google detects this.
- Posting your own positive reviews to drown it out. Banned and obvious.
Stop the next one being a crisis
Fake reviews hit harder when your overall reply rate is low. Get to 100% reply rate within 24 hours and a single fake 1 star barely moves the needle. AutoReplyPilot drafts every reply automatically so you never go to bed with an unanswered review.
